AARON: Hey, Aaron hier. Wie geht’s?
ALLSCHOOLS: Hey, hier ist Susi. Super! Danke, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst. Ich hoffe, dir geht es schon besser, als vor ein paar Monaten?
AARON: Ja!
ALLSCHOOLS: Sehr gut!
Vor ein paar Monaten habt ihr eure erste Single aus dem nächsten Album „Afraid of Heights“ herausgebracht. Für den Song habt ihr einen Contest eröffnet. Fans konnten den Text in Form eines Videos, eines Gemäldes, in Form von Musik – was immer sie wollten – interpretieren.
Ich habe mich gefragt, was ihr erwartet habt und ob diese Erwartungen erfüllt wurden?
AARON: Ja, es war so eine coole Idee die Lyrics herauszugeben und die Leute dazu zu bringen, etwas Eigenes zu interpretieren. Und wie du schon sagtest, man konnte alles machen, was man möchte – einfach alles! Wir hatten glaube ich über 250 Leute, welche unglaubliche Bilder und Videos sendeten. Es war unglaublich. Wir haben nicht damit gerechnet, dass es so ein Erfolg werden würde, aber es war wirklich toll.
ALLSCHOOLS: Aber warum habt ihr bis jetzt noch keine Gewinner bekanntgegeben?
AARON: Eigentlich, vielleicht werden sie sogar heute bekanntgegeben. Aber ich glaube ganz sicher, dass es diese Woche noch passieren wird.
Wir sind alle Einsendungen durchgegangen und es war echt hart!
Wir haben nun einen Gewinner festgelegt und noch ein paar andere zweite Sieger.
Kunst ist wunderschön und es kann alles sein, was du möchtest. Wir sind sehr bewegt von all den tollen Dinge, die gesendet wurden. Es war fantastisch!
ALLSCHOOLS: Also wollt ihr eigentlich am liebsten jeden gewinnen lassen.
AARON: Ja, genau!
ALLSCHOOLS: Das Album wird am 29. Juli erscheinen. Und ich weiß, dass du kein Schlagzeug dafür einspielen konntest. Wann habt ihr entschieden, Jordan von ALEXISONFIRE zu fragen, ob er das für dich übernimmt?
AARON: Letztes Jahr schrieben wir die Platte und ich hatte 12 von 13 Songs im Kasten. Wir waren kurz davor einen letzten Song zu lernen, bevor wir ins Studio wollten. Und ich glaube, es war einfach Überanspruchung. Aber ich habe zu viel gespielt, ich habe mich richtig verletzt dabei – ich habe richtig meinen Rücken verletzt. Meine MS kam wieder hoch. Und, während ich mit am Album geschrieben habe, ging ich zu Ärzten, um alles klarzustellen. Es ist einfach mies, wenn die Medizin, die du seit 10 Jahren nimmst, plötzlich nicht mehr wirkt. Also versuchst du, auf eine andere zu wechseln.
Ich habe mich mit der Band zusammengesetzt „Ich muss eine Pause einlegen und ich möchte nicht, dass ihr auf mich warten müsst, weil ich nicht weiß, ob es Monate dauern wird oder Jahre oder ob ich jemals wieder in der Lage bin, zurückzukehren. Also muss ich mich auf mich und meine Gesundheit konzentrieren und gebe ihm [JORDAN] meinen Segen.“
Es war sehr einfach Jordan zu wählen, weil er ein langjähriger Freund von uns ist – und er ist ein großartiger Schlagzeuger. Er ist für uns Familie.
Wir wollten im Oktober mit den Aufnahmen beginnen und haben es auf Januar verschoben. Er brauchte zwei Monate, um die ganzen Songs zu lernen.
Und ich arbeite immer noch an meiner Gesundheit und wieder Kraft zu bekommen, um Schlagzeug zu spielen. Aber ich bin sehr froh, dass die Band weiter macht.
ALLSCHOOLS: Das ist echt traurig… Also, er hat nichts für das Album geschrieben, sondern hat die Songs von euch erlernt?
AARON: Ja. Die gesamte Band kam mit ihm zusammen. Ian ist das musikalische Genie hinter dem ganzen Album. Das Musikwissen, was in ihm steckt ist unglaublich. Und ja, alle kamen zusammen und lernten zusammen die Songs.
ALLSCHOOLS: Alles klar. Und Jordan ist sogar auf dem aktuellen Presse Foto von BILLY TALENT. Ist er nun ein ‚neues Mitglied‘ (im Moment) von BILLY TALENT?
AARON: Nun, er kam zu uns und nahm das Album mit auf. Wir haben viel darüber gesprochen. I wusste nicht mal, ob ich überhaupt mit auf die Fotos soll und wir wussten nicht, was wir machen sollen. Dann kamen wir zu der Übereinstimmung, warum wir nicht einfach alle auf dem Foto sein sollten?
Und, ich kämpfe immer noch darum, zurück ans Schlagzeug zu gehen. I muss ehrlich mit jedem sein.
Bei einigen unserer Touren, hatte ich eine harte Zeit am Schlagzeug. Also, er ist ein Teil der Familie und er spielte Schlagzeug auf dem Album und wesentlich ist er gerade ein Teil der Band. Es macht einfach total Sinn, ihn und mich auf diesen aktuellen Presse Fotos zu haben.
ALLSCHOOLS: Es ist echt sehr cool, dass ihr das so gemacht habt!
Wenn man sich euren Trailer zum Album „Afraid of Heights“ anschaut: Ben erzählt, worüber das Album handeln wird und sagt Dinge wie „es geht um Hoffnung, Vertrauen […] die Angst, den nächsten Schritt zu wagen“. Für mich klingt es so, als wäre dieses Album das emotionalste Album von BILLY TALENT bis jetzt.
AARON: Ja!
ALLSCHOOLS: Und als ich es mir angehört habe, wurden meine Gedanken bestätigt. Was denkst du darüber? Du hast gerade schon ja gesagt, also siehst du das auch so?
AARON: Nun, es ist wahr. Es sind so viele Emotionen im Spiel. Nicht nur die Situation meiner Gesundheit, sondern auch, was in der Welt abgeht.
Die Songs sind direkt von Dingen beeinträchtigt, die in unserem Leben passieren. Man wird es deutlich auf dem Album hören können. Ich kann es kaum abwarten, dass Leute es hören können. Denn, es ist so, wie du schon sagtest: Sehr emotional und es ist einfach großartig. Ich bin so stolz darauf.
ALLSCHOOLS: Da kann ich nur zustimmen! Also, eure Inspirationen für das Album waren die Dinge, die in der Welt passieren und in eurem Leben, richtig?
AARON: Immer! Wenn auch immer wir ein Album schreiben, geht es gewissermaßen immer um Situationen über unsere Freunde, unser Leben. Es passiert immer so viel. Und wir können das durch einen Song ausdrücken. Es ist so etwas Schönes. Wir können uns wirklich glücklich schätzen und wir nehmen es nicht als selbstverständlich hin.
Man kann es an den Songs hören: Wir werfen nicht einfach irgendwelche Parts zusammen.
Über jeden Part in jedem Song wird sorgfältig nachgedacht, es wird gejammt, bis zum get no gespielt und immer wieder angehört und darüber geredet.
ALLSCHOOLS: Ich glaube, das ist einer der Gründe, warum eure Fans euch als Band so lieben.
Und am Ende des Trailers sagt Ben „es geht um die Kraft des Rock ‘n‘ Roll“.
Was bedeutet dir die Rock Musik?
AARON: Wow… Sehr gute Frage… Rockmusik ist… Einfach alles für mich. Es ist das Leben. Es ist alles zurückzuführen zu einem AC/DC Konzert mit 15 und ein METALLICA Konzert mit 15 Jahren. Einfach jung sein und versuchen, herauszufinden wer du selbst bist.
Es waren Bands wie die [RED HOT] CHILI PEPPERS und all diese Bands, die heute immer noch existieren. Und es geht um Schlagzeug, Bass, Gitarre und Gesang. Es ist ein ziemlich einfaches Konzept, aber wenn die Chemie zwischen vier oder fünf Musikern stimmt, sie zusammen kommen, Musik kreieren und dann auf die Bühne gehen und diese Songs für Leute spielen – es ist wirklich das Beste auf der Welt. Ich glaube, wir versuchen mit „Kraft des Rock ‘n‘ Roll“ auszudrücken: Die Welt braucht gerade jetzt eine Veränderung, lasst uns bewirken, dass Rock ‘n‘ Roll wieder diese Veränderung wird. Und, dass wir all diese jungen Menschen mit unseren Gedanken zum Lächeln bringen.
Nun, es passiert zurzeit eine Menge Mist in der Welt. So etwas Einfaches, wie zu einem Rock Konzert zu gehen, kann so viel Freude und Glück bringen und nichts ist mit dieser Energie vergleichbar – glaube ich zumindest nicht.
ALLSCHOOLS: Was für eine Antwort… Sehe ich genauso! Rock Musik ist für mich auch alles.
Nun, ich hoffe, dass es dir bald wieder besser geht und du im Herbst auf der Bühne sein kannst.

AARON: Hey here is Aaron, how are you?
ALLSCHOOLS: Here is Suzi. I’m fine! Thanks for taking your time. I hope you’re feeling better than a few months ago?
AARON: Yes!
ALLSCHOOLS: Great! So, a few months ago you released the first single of your upcoming album “Afraid of Heights”. For this song you did a contest where fans could interpret the lyrics of the song in form of a painting, of a video, of music, whatever they wanted. And I am wondering: What did you expect what people would do for that and have your expectations been satisfied?
AARON: Yeah, it was such a cool idea to release the lyrics and get people to interpret whatever the way they wanted and kind of like you just said, you could do anything you want – you can do anything! And we had I think over 250 people who sent amazing pictures and videos and… It was just unbelievable. We didn’t think it would be that successful, but it really was great.
ALLSCHOOLS: But why haven’t you announced any winners yet?
AARON: Actually maybe even today. I think it is going to happen this week for sure. We have been going through all the submissions and it was really hard. We got it down to one winner and a couple other runners up. Art is so beautiful and it can be anything you want it to be. And we are just so humbled by all the different and amazing things that came in. It was fantastic!
ALLSCHOOLS: So actually you want everybody to win.
AARON: Yes, exactly!
ALLSCHOOLS: The Album will be released on July 29. And I know you weren’t able to play drums for that. When did you decide to ask Jordan of ALEXISONFIRE to do this job for you?
AARON: Last year we were writing the record and I had 12 of 13 song figured out and we were just figuring out and learning one last song before we went into the studio and I really... I guess it was overtraining but I was just trying too hard and I really hurt myself. I really hurt my back. My MS was really spearing up. You know, while I was writing the record I was going to doctors, trying to figure everything out. It is just bumming that... You know, your medicine you have been on for 10 years isn’t working anymore, so you want to switch it to a different medicine. I had a meeting with the band, you know “I have to take a break and I don’t want you guys to wait, because I don’t know if this is going to take 6 months or 6 years or if I ever will be able to come back, so I just need to focus on myself and my health and I am going to give him [JORDAN] a blessing.
It was really easy to pick Jordan, because he is a friend and he’s good with us for so long and he is an amazing drummer. He is family to us.
We were going to record in October and we had to bump it to January. So it took him two months to learn all the songs. And I am still working on my health and getting strength to get back on the drums, but I am really glad, that the band is looking forward.
ALLSCHOOLS: That’s so sad… So, he didn’t write anything for the album, he learned all the songs from you?
AARON: Yes! The whole band and he got together. Ian is the musical genius behind this whole record. The knowledge of music that’s inside that guy is unbelievable. Yes, all the guys got together and they all learned the songs.
ALLSCHOOLS: Alright. And Jordan is even on the new press photo of Billy Talent. I was wondering, if he is kind of a new member (for the moment) of the band now?
AARON: You know, he came in and recorded the record. We had a lot of talks about that. I don’t even know if I should be in the pictures and we didn’t know what to do. And we just kind of came to the consensus, why don’t we all just be in the picture? And you know, I am still going to fight to get back on the drums. I have to be honest with everybody. You know, some of the tours we did, I was just having a hard time on the drums. So, he is part of the family and he played drums on the record and he is essentially part of the band right now. It just makes complete sense to have him and myself in these current press photos.
ALLSCHOOLS: It is really cool that you did this!
When you watch the trailer for ‘’Afraid of Heights’’: Ben talks about what the album will be about and says things like ‘’…it’s about hope, faith […] the fear of taking it to the next level.’’ To me it sounds like it is going to be the most emotional album of BILLY TALENT so far.
AARON: Yes!
ALLSCHOOLS: When I listened to it, my thoughts were actually approved. So, what do you think? You already said yes, so you agree?
AARON: Well, it is true. It is so much emotion around. Not only the situation that is happing with my health, the situation that is happing around the world. The songs are directly affected what is going on in our lives. You’re really going to be able to hear it on this record. I just can’t wait for people to hear it. Because it’s like you said, very emotional and it’s just great. I’m so proud of it.
ALLSCHOOLS: I totally agree with that, definitely. So the things that inspired you were everything that goes around in the world and your lives, right?
AARON: Always! Whenever we write a record, it’s always about kind situations about our friends, our lives. There is always so much drama happening. And we can relieve that through a song. It’s such a beautiful thing. We are just really blessed and we don’t take it for granted. You will hear it in the songs: We are not just ever throwing together a bunch of parts. It’s like every single part of every song has been meticulously thought about and jammed out and played out and listened to and talked about.
ALLSCHOOLS: I think that’s one of the reasons your fans love you as a band.
And at the end of the trailer Ben says ‘’It’s about the power of rock ‘n’ roll’’ What does rock music mean to you?
AARON: Wow… Very good question... Rock music is… Everything to me. It’s life. It all stands from being exposed to an AC/DC concert at the age of 15 and a METALLICA concert at the age 15. Being young and just trying to figure out your identity and who you are.
It was bands like the [RED HOT] CHILI PEPPERS and all those bands that are still bands today.
And it’s all about drums, bass, guitar and vocals. It is a pretty simple concept, but when you can get the chemistry of four humans, or five humans to jell, to create music and then step on stage and play those songs for people - it truly is the most powerful thing in the world. I think we’re trying to say ‘‘the power of rock ‘n’ roll’’ is: The world needs change right now and let’s get rock ‘n’ roll to be that change again. And to be that influence that all the young people are smiling to what we’re going through.
You know, a lot of heavy shit is going on in the world right now. So, something as simple as going to a rock concert can bring joy and happiness and nothing can be compared to the power of that - I don’t think.
ALLSCHOOLS: What an answer… I totally agree with that! To me rock music is everything as well.
